As you walk into K212, you feel the sense of security and happiness her classroom holds. Before the bell rings, you can catch her chatting with her students and establishing a bond between them. An English 1-2 and 3-4 Teacher, Nathalie Parker makes English class enjoyable due to her understanding nature, and the creativity she brings to her assignments or teaching. There has never been a dull moment in that class.
Having said that, this is her first year at Sunnyslope and teaching High School level students. Nonetheless, she has done a phenomenal job at getting her students’ minds open to everything that falls under the English category.
Though we only did go over two writing styles, I feel that I’ve gained confidence in my writing skills because of her. Writing better means a lot to me, because I felt like I hit a plateau in my skills. I wasn’t writing anything I liked, I never got praised for it, until I stepped into Mrs. Parker’s class where she gave nothing but great writing activities, constant praise, and helpful corrections when needed.
Freshman Genniss Morris said, “I don’t like writing at all actually, but now I don’t mind doing it anymore after writing in Mrs. Parker’s class.”
Going through this year, I have gotten a lot more comfortable with writing any type of paper. Whether it be persuasion, argumentative, informative or opinionated; I have shown growth in those skills.
Besides writing, under her teaching, I’ve shaped up my grammar and vocabulary in a way I never thought I could In six months. That is all thanks to the daily grammar drills we do in work books, and the book report projects we had to do.
Freshman Amaya Jackson explains, “Yeah the grammar books were annoying, but I didn’t expect what we were learning was affecting my speech as much as it has.”
Being in Mrs. Parker’s English 1-2 class is like having a meaningful conversation with a best friend. It helps you understand the world with a broader lens, and express yourself clearer.
Her class didn’t just help with leveling up my skills as a writer but my social skills improved as well. Speaking up during class conversations or being one-on-one is easier with her compared to most teachers I’ve had over the years due to her warm personality and open mind.
Freshman Wyatt Carbajal said, “ She makes me feel at home and like we’re all her own. I’ve never felt the urge to participate in class until I’ve had Mrs. Parker as a teacher.”
Though this is Mrs. Parker’s first year teaching high school level students, she has done nothing but make sure she covers her bases with teaching her students what they need to learn. Typically teachers under her circumstances are very go with the flow and scattered, but Mrs. Parker, yes still flexible, makes sure she gives her students the tests they’re supposed to do, the assignments they were supposed to do, under a reasonable amount of time and no excuses. She has found a great balance of being relaxed, while staying proactive.
When talking to your counselor, make sure to mention Mrs. Parker’s 1-2/3-4 English class to secure your spot. You won’t be sorry!
