Halloween brings excitement to people around the world, and celebrities take this big day as an opportunity to announce and release projects.
On Halloween of 2023, Conan Gray released his much awaited single “Killing Me.”
Gray decided to venture away from his typical discography with this song, and it’s definitely… something.
With most of his songs surrounding feelings such as heartbreak and grief, he carries these ideas into “Killing Me.”
However, the auditory aspect is much different than what fans expected.
His loyal audience, including myself, have anticipated this release since it was announced on October 13th, and to say the least, we are disappointed.
Conan Gray layered and modified the song, so much to the point that his voice is almost unrecognizable.
Upon my first listen, my jaw dropped (not in the good way), and I sat with my mouth open as I attempted to process what this beautiful artist did to his reputation.
Now, Gray is known to have been sick while creating this song, but it is just so incredibly dissatisfying to a point that I don’t think it’s justifiable, even by the flu.
Despite the lack of enjoyment while listening to this song, it does have decent lyrics.
Gray manages to craft his words in a way that allows listeners to feel seen.
In this release, he demonstrates a situation where someone is so blindly in love that they don’t leave, regardless of how terrible the treatment they receive is.
While I do feel these lyrics and appreciate his ability to relate to his audience, I do not enjoy them enough to put myself through listening to this song any more than I need to, as I’ve already had to listen several more times than I wished in order to write this evaluation fairly.
As much as I support Gray and love his music (usually), I did not enjoy this song and would not recommend listening to it.
You can form your own opinion though, this single is available on Spotify, Apple Music, and most other streaming platforms, good luck.
