With 16 seniors in counting, Sunnyslope Boys Soccer team has found themselves on a run of victories in what will be the majority of the team’s last season.
The stakes are high, and spectators hope for strong results.
“It’s an exciting group of athletes that have played together for a long time,” said Head Coach Mike Fenton.
The number of seniors on Sunnyslope’s team is unheard of, but there are clear benefits as shown by their 5-4-2 record.
Senior Preston Kasovac, one of this year’s captains, has a good feeling about this season and said, “We’ve been playing together for so long that there’s a stronger team dynamic.”
Compared to other teams with as little as 4-5 seniors, Sunnyslope has a clear advantage in experience.
Senior Dylan Cunanan believes Slope’s early success can be attributed to the team’s seniors, as he said there’s “more competition” knowing that player’s spots are not secured.
The extra competition has drummed up determination, which has led to stunning results.
“I think we’ll definitely make the playoffs,” said Kasovak.
Kasovak and Cunanan both hope to have a strong performance in their last year.
Sunnyslope has yet to advance to the final rounds of playoffs within Kasovak and Cunanan’s playing history.
Nonetheless, Cunanan said, “I want to make it to the Semifinals, which is a goal that I think is obtainable.”
At the moment Sunnyslope finds themselves in the running for this year’s playoffs, and if they keep up their hard work, their hopes may come true.
“This is extremely rare,” said coach Michael Fenton, “last year we lost 6-1 [to Pinnacle] and this year we tied 2-2,” showing just how much the team has improved.
Whatever the results of the season, spectators can expect to watch competitive games with the most promising boy’s soccer team Sunnyslope has had in years.
