Short’s Definition: measuring a small distance from end to end. Example sentence “7 year old Timmy is short.”
Senior Gavin Short’s Definition: Not short.
“He’s [Short] got good strength,” Senior Cooper Schillington said, “I think physically, he’s probably the biggest kid on our team.”
On December 3rd Short committed to South Mountain CC and will undoubtedly make a quick impact.
Shillington said that he’s got good pop in his bat and Senior Connor Keo said, “ He also can pitch well, he can hit well, and fields the ball pretty well.”
Short’s been on Varsity for 4 years and fields a career batting average of .357, on base percentage of .468, and 40 career runs batted in and he will be heading to South Mountain who had an outstanding record of 43.15 last year.
Short said that the coaches were fantastic and super nice and said, “I just asked a bunch of questions because I wanted to make sure it was the right fit for me.”
South Mountain has also been successful in sending athletes to keep playing after community college which Short was very interested in.
“They had 12 DI guys come out of that school last year,” Short said.
The cougars coaching staff probably knows they have a lock in the 6’1” 200 LBS infielder/Pitcher, but what they will soon learn about his stellar personality, too.
“Off the field he’s also very calm and humble about everything,” said Keo, “He’s not going to go out and boast like he’s the best player ever.”
This attitude is not only great off the field but how he acts on the field isn’t that much different.
Keo said, “He’s definitely one of the most vocal guys in our dugout and he’s telling us to keep the energy up.”
Shorts game and personality has helped contribute to the Vikings this year who are off to a hot 8-2 start, but it also helped form some great memories.
“I just like all the practices, hanging out with my friends and my boys,” said Short.
However, although Short might not know it, some of his teammates have had some great memories made around Gavin.
Keo said that one day some of them were sitting around in the clubhouse when Short messed up a joke which made all the guys laugh because “It’s the most Gavin thing ever to mess up a joke that easy.”
Keo isn’t the only one who’ll miss Gavin’s humor.
“Just the jokes and good times,” said Shillington, “There’s never a dull moment.”
With this combination of character and skill, Short’s future South Mountain teammates will probably appreciate the memories they make with just as much as they’ll appreciate his pitching and bat.
