The Phoenix Suns have fallen to the Minnesota Timberwolves this last Sunday in 4 games and have many questions ahead for the offseason.
Some of the main questions regarding the Suns is what they will do with their big three (Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Bradley Beal).
An issue is that the cap situation has led to us being unable to sign many free agents and having a very difficult time to capitalize on the star players the Suns have.
This issue started during the 2023 midseason when we mortgaged the near entire future for Kevin Durant.
Durant is one of the best players in the entire NBA but with no depth behind we have no ability to support him.
We traded away Forwards Mikal Bridges and Cam Johnson along with a plethora of picks in the Kevin Durant deal which ultimately broke up the very young core that made a finals run in 2021.
The following offseason we went all in, trading for Beal and Jusuf Nurkic and firing Monty Williams who was named coach of the year the previous season.
This all led into the Suns being the preseason favorite for the 2024 season and having enormous expectations from the fans.
Although, this all took a turn for the worse around the beginning of the season when each of the big three took turns battling with injuries, not playing together for the first time until two months into the season. Suns ultimately never picked up steam and hobbled into the playoffs as the 6 seed.
Phoenix hopeful still had faith as the Suns were still favored to knock off the 3 seeded Minnesota Timberwolves.
Unfortunately no one seemed to take into account the lack of chemistry our team had as the Suns were the only team to get swept in the first round.
During this series the Suns demonstrated what the fans had seen all year: a lack of focus on the defensive end and a confusion of the offensive side of the ball with the majority of our offense being generated from isolation.
This leads us into the offseason where their is not much left for us to do.
We have already leveraged all of our cap and picks leaving us with no trade assets and no opportunities to improve the team.
We have dug our own grave these past few seasons and will be faced with some difficult choices as to whether abandon the big three and trade one of them for some future picks or depth or continue marching with this current team and hope we can create some offensive and defensive chemistry that can carry over into a deep playoff run this next season.
