On January 8, Senior Amelia (Meals) Mickelson broke a 3-point program record for the Girls Varsity Basketball Team making 7 of her 9 three pointers
Along with this freshly broken record, Mickelson was also nominated for the AZ Central Player of the Week award for her accomplishments.
Mickelson has played on Varsity for 4 years and has been known for her terrific shooting abilities.
Coach Kristen Clyder said she is “not surprised at all that Meals went off that night. She was playing confidently the entire game.”
Mickelson’s big night also helped the girls team gain some attention from Slope students and other schools on social media.
In response to their newfound fame, Clyder said it’s “always awesome when one of our girls gets acknowledged for their hard work.”
After news of Mickelson’s broken record and her nomination for AZ Central Player of the Week spread at school, many members of the Slope community rushed to congratulate her.
Varsity Girls Basketball Point Guard Teagan McIlroy believes that Mickelson is, “one of the best shooters [she] knows, so she deserves the acknowledgment.”
Mickelson said learning about her nomination “It was a surprise to me, and that she didn’t find out until [she] walked into first hour and [her] teacher was talking about it.”
This nomination definitely helped the team’s confidence but Mickelson also stated it “helped [her own] confidence and has given [her] more motivation.”
In addition to breaking personal records, the girls basketball team recently beat the number one ranked team in the 6A Central Region: Millennium High School.
Junior Kaleb Seow, who plays on Slope’s Varsity Basketball team, said that, “the environment” at the Millennium game on January 23 “really allowed the girls to feel a sense of community as the home court advantage was a big part of the game.”
Math Teacher Cameron Licht said, “The thing I notice the most about the team is how much you guys share the ball around, and how intense you all are on defense.”
