Known as the voice of his generation, he was one of the first musicians to take an active role on moral issues. A true poet and composer.
These are all things that can be said about the worldwide sensation of Bob Dylan.
And now his story is coming to life in “A Complete Unknown”, starring Timothee Chalamet playing Bob himself.
“A Complete Unknown” follows the journey of a young rising star, Bob Dylan, who navigates complicated relationships and a desire to make a controversial choice to potentially change how the world views his music.
Timothee Chalamet does a wonderful job of capturing Dylan’s essence in the film, even singing all of the songs live, despite not being a decorated singer previously.
Due to the film’s historical accuracy, the audience feels as if they are transported back in time, almost experiencing the events in real life.
Along with this, the complicated relationships in Dylan’s life match to a T in the film.
Elle Fanning plays Sylvie Russo, Dylan’s first serious girlfriend, and Monica Barbaro plays Joan Baez, Dylan’s other love interest.
The 3 actors accurately depict the complex love triangle between them and make the audience invested in how it will all play out.
Similar to the film “Rocketman”, which dissects the life of Elton John, “A Complete Unknown” dives deep into the complexities involved in Bob Dylan’s life instead of skimming the surface. “Rocketman” and “A Complete Unknown” both do a great job of paying tribute to these great artists who will be remembered for generations to come.
Both Taron Egerton and Timothee Chalamet sang live for these roles as well, which made their portrayal of these artists more authentic and allowed the audience to feel a genuine connection to their stories.
Director James Mangold did a wonderful job of displaying Dylan’s hardships while also focusing on his musical choices, like using an electric guitar, a choice that stirred up a lot of controversy in the folk music industry.
Throughout the whole movie, Mangold keeps the audience entertained through his attention to detail and accuracies, which make the film even more realistic and genuine.
Mangold did a great job of keeping his actors motivated and performing well, specifically with Chalamet, as he fully supported his decision to sing live and worked tirelessly with the actor to produce the most authentic results that would leave the audience wowed.
“A Complete Unknown” is currently in theaters or available to buy on Apple TV.
