It is now the year 2038 and it has been 35 years since the outbreak started. Following the now 19 year old girl through her mission of grief, loss, love and revenge. “The Last of Us” is back for season two where in just the first three episodes it has so much to give, both upsetting and satisfying to witness.
The first three episodes of “The Last of Us” kicks off with a bold narrative choice. It immediately dives into the emotionally charged event following Ellie’s decision at the end of the first season. The premiere episode masterfully set a somber tone. It highlights the fractured relationship between Joel and Ellie as they grapple with the consequences of their actions. New characters are added throughout the three new episodes and each of them add a layer of complexity to the already intricate world. The new season explores loss, sexuality, revenge, love, and fear.
“The Last of Us” is similar to the 2006 film “Children of Men”. Both of the films have the same aesthetic, tone and central narrative. The core character relationship that Joel and Ellie have is very similar to the relationship in the movie “Children of Men.” They both also have very similar premises. Both follow an older man and a younger girl who represent the “cure” in a collapsing world. They both give a depiction on what happens when the future is stripped away.
Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, the show’s creators, deliver a powerful continuation of the story, deepening the emotional complexity and character development that made the first season so impactful. The performances are absolutely outstanding, with the cast bringing raw authenticity to every moment. The narrative boldly explores themes of loss, revenge and redemption. The creators did an amazing job with keeping it similar to the original game and creating an amazing narrative.
“The Last of Us” is primarily streamed on MAX (formally known as HBO). Additionally, it’s available on live TV services that carry MAX, such as DirecTV, Hulu, +Live TV, and Sling.
