Over one billion people speak Mandarin Chinese, making it the most spoken language in the world. Meanwhile, the combined populations of Indonesia and Brazil are just under 500 million.
500 million people is also the estimated number of native Spanish speakers, which is the second-largest number in the world, behind only Mandarin Chinese. Spanish is clearly a valuable language to learn, and no one can do it better than Heather Wilk in her Spanish 3-4 class.
In Spanish 3-4, students expand their vocabulary and learn about the preterite and imperfect forms in Spanish, as well as building on what they learned about Spanish grammar and culture in 1-2.
Just like a summer trip to Barcelona, Wilk’s class allows students to immerse themselves in a different world in a fun, memorable, and exciting way.
Wilk does an excellent job of helping students remember the complex foreign language in a variety of ways, from writing stories down to speaking aloud to your partner to ensure that students retain and understand the information they are learning.
She always does a cultural connection at the end of the unit so students can learn in what contexts they can use their new vocabulary, but also so they can learn more about the Spanish-speaking world as well, from immigration to the Camino de Santiago.
Wilk is always kind and patient with students, understanding that mistakes are an important part of learning another language.
Freshman Jameson Aragorn thought that the class was “really fun” and the fact that Wilk “talks to us in Spanish a lot” helped students get used to hearing the language.
Sophomore Izeyah Pinales-Quevedo preferred learning from the writing rather than the speaking, which was highlighted when he said, “The stories are always really wild. Very entertaining.”
Sophomore Trenton Thomas enjoyed being able to learn “new and valuable skills” in a world in which Spanish is becoming increasingly more important, as well as simply “all the activities we do.”
If you are trying to test into Spanish 3-4 or are moving up to get your next foreign language credit, make sure to ask your counselor to request Heather Wilk to get the best Spanish experience possible. ¡Será muy divertida!
