As the bows make contact with the strings, the room creates an entirely different vibe.
The students’ hard work and tireless dedication shine through the sound waves of music, filling the air with many emotions, as if the whole room had changed just for them.
The musical arts programs, Intermediate and Advanced Orchestra, led by Stephen Alguire, are prime examples of creativity and a loving community.
This being said, everyone’s creativity shines harmoniously, introducing students and family to the classical music genre from a different perspective, rather than the popular composer Beethoven.
Although many students including Freshman Veola and Zai Abraham, were introduced to the wonderful art of orchestral music before their freshman year of high school. The twins state that the orchestra program introduced them to very unique experiences they would have never thought of.
Veola, the current first-chair violist for the Intermediate program, was one of the few kids to proceed to Regionals for orchestra.
Veola further explains that it was truly the best part of her freshman year. Also stating that she made amazing memories with her peers, the regional conductor, and enjoyed being able to have a field trip to Flagstaff.
However, regionals might not be for everyone, Veola’s sister Zai mentioned that she didn’t want to apply for her freshman year, because she wanted to focus more on her studies at that time.
In addition to the fact that you can participate in Regionals, the students in both orchestras compete in competitions and do the performance art assembly!
Junior Lukas Lira clarifies this statement, “I like that we go along with advanced orchestra to competitions and the assembly, and that Mr. Alguire is always making sure that his Intermediate orchestra isn’t left behind.”
In the students’ previous competition (2024/2025) both Intermediate and Advanced Orchestra ended off with flying colors getting a superior grade on both of their performances.
Even after their performance, they continued to learn the art of their instruments, learning from multiple conductors and each other, strengthening their knowledge and personal growth.
An example of the students’ environment while being in orchestra is further interpreted by Senior Jasmine Romo Cruz, Jasmine has been a part of this class since her freshman year of high school.
She explains that during her first two years of highschool the orchestra was one whole class, not separated into advanced and intermediate, but even during this time the environment was just as fun as it is now.
Romo Cruz expresses that she enjoys “helping her underclassmen as a Senior, although we may not be in the same graduation year, I love them all equally.”
Her love for orchestra all started with Mr. Alguire, helping her and many others create long-lasting friendships.
All four of these students voiced that Alguire has a humorous and enthusiastic personality.
While Alguire is able to engage his students with his incredibly funny stories, creating such a positive atmosphere.
They emphasized his ability to get things done when needed, showcasing his well-balanced lifestyle of fun and responsibility.
Overall, Stephen Alguire is one of the greatest people to teach you how to play an instrument.
His knowledge of the instruments will help you better understand how to play.
Through his and his students’ hard work, he has built two of the best orchestra classes of all time.
His passion for music and education has and continues to play a crucial role, fostering a talented generation of musicians.
