The cold AC breeze fills the room as the eager freshman sits down and opens her computer. Taking a deep breath, she positions her fingers over the keyboard, ready to pour her thoughts out onto the blank Google Doc. The review she’s about to write won’t be her first, but with help from her fellow reporters and teacher, it will be one of her best.
The review article she wrote is just one of the many articles students will learn how to write in James King’s Journalism 1-2 Class. Young journalists in the class rely on feedback from their peers to form articles and visuals in hope of having their work published onto the prestigious Viking Views website.
During Journalism 1-2, students learn everything from the history of famous journalists to making games. The class is a collaborative and chill atmosphere where students work at their own pace to complete assignments. Students’ creativity and writing skills become strengthened after taking the class.
Freshman Harper Ayer noted that Journalism has helped her “write better” which helps her during “English projects.”
Ayer isn’t the only student who benefited from Journalism.
Freshman Madeline Tomich stated that Journalism helped her “expand [her] creativity.”
Taking Journalism is like finishing a hard workout. Both provide you with an immense sense of accomplishment and joy, which leaves you feeling refreshed and powerful. After finishing both, you become stronger.
King teaches the class with the importance of working in an actual newsroom.
“The way that we work with all of the big computers and fancy software really helps the classroom feel like we’re doing something not just for fun,” said Freshman Kaitlin Windtberg. King makes sure the class uses professional platforms such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign in order to create professional publications.
Students interested in taking Journalism 1-2 should see their counselors to request the course.
