In every high school, there’s some story waiting to be told. Sunnyslope journalism teacher Mr. King creates the space where students’ stories come to life. His classroom sparks with several different ideas, and curiosity about what’s happening with current events, and on campus. Through his interviews, articles, and teamwork, this course builds not just stronger writing skills, but more thoughtful listeners, and people ready to make a difference in the world today.
Many students walk away from journalism with skills they didn’t expect to gain. Freshman Eleanor Bednarek said, “I’ve learned how to think more critically, and ask better questions, it changed how I view the world and how I now write about it.”
For multiple students, this class became their favorite. Freshman Ava Martinez said, “This class is where I learned how to write better and actually listen to what people have to say.” This class can help students plenty by teaching them not only writing skills, but also listening skills especially when interviewing somebody.
Students say that Journalism is more than just another elective for them. Sophomore Nahder Seyoum said, “Mr. King is really chill and usually lets us work on our own time, but he also treats our work like it actually matters which I feel like you don’t see a lot of now in teachers.” Not only does the class teach important skills, but Journalism teacher Mr. King is an excellent teacher, and will treat students as his own children, which is comforting in a way to some.
This special elective is more than learning how to write, it’s also about learning about the world around us, and wanting to understand it. The class is extremely special and it sparks lot’s of creativity in students minds.
