The clicking and clacking of the school laptops, the eerie silence that is only broken when the timer expires, or the constant squirming in and out of the uncomfortable desks.
These are just a few of the sounds dominating Rina Beukama’s AP Language during a timed write.
However, this English class isn’t just about reading comprehension with vocabulary, even though you’ll do some of that too. It’s about learning how to read between the lines, how to argue with evidence, and how to write like your words matter.
Through months of preparation to take the AP exam in May, consisting of rhetorical analysis, synthesis, and argument based writing, Ms B constantly pushes her students to become the best writers, students, and test takers they can become.
AP Language is like a strategic game of chess, every move in your writing must be calculated, strategic, and precise.
Beukama takes a helpful but realistic approach to not only her teaching style, but her interactions with students as well.
“Miss B just makes it such a welcoming environment, and she understands what it’s like to be a student, making things so much easier for us,” Junior Nora Lazare said.
Other students described her other teaching methods.
“She always is giving us little treats as incentives to try our best and create good writing pieces, so that helps [us focus on our work],” Junior Lauryn Bishop said.
AP Lang is similar to other English classes in the fact that it helps to build off the base concepts of grammar, punctuation, and reading comprehension. However, it adds more rigor when students are asked to take these concepts and apply them to higher level abstract thinking.
Some students however, just enjoyed the presence Beukama brings to the classroom.
“It is fun to be with my friends in class, and Ms B allows us to work within our groups and partners to help each other prepare and share ideas,” said Junior Ryan Clark.
So while AP Language consists of long essays, grammar concepts, and an overall basis as to how to write efficiently, Miss Beukama provides a lively, fun, and stimulating environment that is sure to engage students and create the next generation of star studded writers.
So if you are, or know any 10th grade students looking to challenge themselves through rigorous writing, be sure to ask your counselor for AP Language with Miss Rina Beukama!
