Heritage isn’t just about tradition, sometimes Heritage means creating new customs and embracing every trait presented. Imagine shifting the perspective from past traditions to understanding and reforming older traditions.
Embracing the different contexts of heritage is a vital aspect that students in Celia Sanabria-Aguilar’s Heritage Spanish Class: Making the lessons taught to something personal and relatable to the students. Aguilar’s class illustrates a setting where students advance their writing skills, speaking skills, creativity, and comprehension skills – and even learn how to have basic grammar skills in a Spanish context.
This class is like going to the Grand Canyon-why walk when you can explore? Senora Aguilar brings her students inside the short-stories and worksheets- students feel them the way you feel the cold breeze while standing on the trail.
Aguilar has an approach where she comes off very relatable and empathetic, while still having the perfect balance of discipline.
The assignments are easy and very deep in meaning.
For this reason, she is very flexible and comforting when it comes to helping with assignments.
She has a passion for teaching, so her demeanor is a buzz of excitement; however, when students are uncooperative, she does turn a new leaf.
Others note that she has helped in many both personal and educational aspects.
Sophomore Jesse Rodriguez expressed that being in a heritage class “makes you put in the effort to try to speak more fluently to your native language” and helped him create a deeper family connection .
Other students feel like being in a heritage class creates a comfortable environment.
Heritage Spanish provided an opportunity for students to include traditions and customs from their home in a school setting- Sophomore Allyson Sanches said.
Everyone knows Aguilar has a passion for teaching heritage students, and the reason to not like Aguilar’s class would be because you’re too scared to embrace new things.
