Sunnyslope Varsity Football defeated Notre Dame Prep 29-28 in a thrilling game on Friday night.
After a tough 59-14 loss last season, the Vikings came out hard, playing with a point to prove.
In the last quarter, Junior Brendan Camp had the opportunity to step in for a hurting Tommy Reeve–and he made it count.
“On that 4th down, I saw the quarterback’s eyes go towards the wide receiver, so I kind of shifted over there, and then [Senior] Pat[rick] Ross hit him while he threw it, and I was able to intercept it and return it to where I knew [Senior] Reed [Mitzel] could make the kick,” said Camp.
Under peak pressure, Mitzel stepped back and remembered “Padre and Lucas, who have helped me so much to mentally prepare to be ready for the kick,” and he made the 53-yard field goal to win the game.
It was only Mitzel’s second high school football kick ever, and he humbly celebrated such a significant moment.
“I feel the game was great, and of course the field goal to win felt amazing, but I couldn’t have done it without my team and my coaches. Especially Tommy and Ryan because it was a great snap and hold, but also Brendan with the pick because without him, we wouldn’t have gotten the chance to kick it.”
Camp did the same; he said, “It felt great being able to make a big play in a big spot to help us pull off the miraculous win, and it felt even better finally beating NDP after years of losing!”
