United States President Donald Trump has voiced an interest in seeking a third presidential term, several times since March, according to The Guardian.
In fact, NBC News said “Trump has suggested that he’s looking at ways to run again for president, though the Constitution limits any person to being elected to the office twice” and that “There are methods which you could do it.”
Trump could be referring to two methods in which he could possibly serve a third term.
The first one would be to amend the Constitution to repeal the 22nd Amendment.
“Amending the Constitution to abolish the two-term limit would be exceedingly difficult, requiring either a two-thirds vote of Congress or two-thirds of the states agreeing to call a constitutional convention to propose changes,” said NBC News.
The second method Trump spoke of is Vice President JD Vance acting as president, with Trump serving as Vice President.
According to BBC News, Trump has a list of “Republicans who could take his place, including… Vance.”
This highlights a growing idea of Vance being a potential successor.
Northeastern Global News said, “It’s a ludicrous argument. They could argue that Trump isn’t constitutionally ineligible to serve as president — only to be elected president.”
Although never done before, a former president who has served two terms, can technically become Vice President and assume the presidency later on if the acting president steps down or is unable to serve.
Notably, the 22nd Amendment states that “No person shall be elected to the office of president more than twice.”
In this case, he wouldn’t be elected; he would have to step up, assuming the position.
If this were to happen, Trump would most likely have to fight for the presidency in court. Due to the debate of its constitutionality.
According to CBS News, Trump told reporters, “No matter how you look at it, we’ve got a long time to go. We have a long time. You know, we have almost four years to go… but despite that, so many people are saying, ‘you’ve got to run again.”
As Trump continues to express interest in running again, some supporters have spoken up- including several Republican politicians.
According to Independent, “Tennessee Republican Andy Ogles stated that he wants Trump to run for a third term.”
After Ogles post on X, Trump’s intention to serve a third term as president has gained even more attention—attention that has been both critical and encouraging in nature.
