Sunnyslope’s Senior Class of 2025 donated trees as their class gift, with the intention of providing shade and peace to the school grounds, according to Tim Matteson, Assistant Principal of Operations and Athletics.
It is well-known that Sunnyslope’s premise lacks shade, which is an ongoing struggle for students during the hot summer days.
According to Matteson, the trees have not been planted yet as all the necessary preparations are still underway.
“The square footage [of the quad] is so large that certain things needed to be completed first,” Matteson said.
Because planting trees would be the final step of the process, other construction projects must be completed before students can experience the gift from the seniors.
Matteson said “Sleeves are put under that concrete so we can run irrigation lines through it, and then the next step is, the installation of the irrigation, which will happen soon. And then the planting of the trees and shrubs and some installation of Astroturf as well.”
Many students are happy that the class of 2025 decided to give shade-providing trees.
Sophomore Lincoln Mckinley said, “That’d be pretty cool… green up the campus, you know?”
Some students remarked on the environmental impact of new greenery instead of the added aesthetic.
Freshman Jude Prefontaine said, “Trees help the ecosystem.”
Since there has been plenty of construction going on at Sunnyslope for the past four years, many would love to see some greenery around campus as soon as possible.
So as landscaping efforts on campus wrap up, students eagerly await the delivery of new trees.
