From a new Victor’s Place location to new building names, the 2024 school year brought a slew of exciting, fresh features to Sunnyslope.
Along with these many additions, Sunnyslope received one student who would stand out among the crowd and quickly become a valued part of the Sunnyslope community.
Senior Kaleb Seow transferred to Sunnyslope from Basha High School, beginning his time as a Viking in the 2024-2025 school year.
The primary reason for Seow’s transfer was to play basketball with one of the top teams in the state.
“I just really liked the program, and I really liked the team aspect I saw… and I really liked how Coach Portela held his players accountable… I just think that the culture is what really drew me to Slope, not only on the court, but in the halls and in class and everything too,” said Seow.
Since joining the team, Seow has made a clear impact on the court.
Freshman Linus Turner said, “He’s a great teammate. He always makes the extra pass, and he’s a great guy.”
Senior Nash Parmley, who was formerly a club teammate of Seow’s, is overjoyed to have gained Seow at Sunnyslope.
“I liked playing club basketball together. He was so great and nice, and he just brought positivity and consistent effort to the game,” said Parmley.
Even as a fairly recent addition to the basketball program, Seow has made others feel included, working to carry on the strong culture he so adores about Slope Basketball.
“Kaleb has made me feel super welcome on the team,” said Sophomore Cash Fischer.
However, basketball isn’t Seow’s only sport of interest.
In addition to basketball, Seow plans to join the boys’ volleyball team this year.
Last season, he was unable to compete because of his commitment to club basketball, but in his tryout with the team, he proved to be a hard worker, and Head Boys Volleyball Coach Brooke Kern said, “We are excited for his energy.”
In another world, perhaps Seow pursued cheerleading rather than basketball.
When he isn’t the one in action, Seow can be found supporting those who are.
Parmley said, “Kaleb is such a great supporter. Anytime there is a game, he is there, on theme, and loud.”
Due to Seow’s consistent energy, he is often regarded as an honorary Green Team member, as he is often a leading member of the student section.
Seow’s consistent energy displays “his ability to just kind of be outgoing, no matter what,” said Senior Ryan Clark.
Students look forward to seeing Seow at every event, and even just in the hallways.
“I’ve known him for five years now. I mean, he’s always been cool, he’s always he’s never really changed. So he’s just always been kind of genuine and himself.”
Seow’s authenticity is unique; while some find school mundane, Seow brings laughter and energy to every class, making it easy for classmates to befriend him.
“It’s really cool that he’s kind of integrated himself so well in such a short amount of time. It definitely shows how good of a personality he has,” said Senior Quinlyn Hanson.
Many students have had the pleasure of meeting Seow in his short time at Sunnyslope.
Now it’s almost hard to imagine what Slope would be like without him.
