Rising into the sky, a familiar figure ascends–carrying not only a symbol of Hope but also a friendly face.
This is a reminder that humanity is not defined by perfection but by the courage to keep pushing forward and to always look up.
This sentiment is at the heart of James Gunn’s 2025 Movie Superman, where the iconic superhero embodies hope and the ‘old-fashioned’ dreams of a better future for everyone.
In the newly rebooted DCU, Superman (David Corenswet) stands as a beacon of peace for the world, in which he still questions his belonging.
After preventing Boravia from invading the neighboring country, Jarhanpur, he becomes wrapped up in a heated global debate on superhero policy.
Meanwhile, tech mogul, billionaire, and professional hater Lex Luthor schemes to remove Superman from the global chessboard.
As these challenges are overcome, Superman has to confront questions about identity, what it means to be a human, and the true meaning of peace, justice, and the American way.
Like other superhero movies, this story pits Superman against many different foes who challenge him in new ways.
While the epic high-scale action and world-threatening villains resemble spectacles in other superhero movies, such as Fantastic Four, First Steps, or The Justice League, the story beautifully crafts a balance between heavy action and heartfelt messaging that is sure to make the reader remember why hope is so important.
Gunn’s 2025 Superman optimistically creates a cinematic world that is sure to keep audiences on the edge of their seat.
The cinematography, costuming, and set design is a modern masterclass on how to create depth within a short movie, using visual motifs and captivating action.
As well, Superman balances comedic relief and serious dialogue about everyday problems.
While I would agree that this movie does wonders in all aspects, I believe that its strong suit is the genuineness it takes on as a reboot of Superman.
Gunn utilizes the characters greatly with an ensemble cast that tells a story of an immigrant from Kansas who stands up for what’s right and tries his best in everything he does.
This story evolves into a hopeful commentary about war, belonging, and how people form relationships with others.
Superman has been in theaters since July 11, 2025. It will be released digitally on August 15, 2025, and will most likely be uploaded to HBO Max in the upcoming months.
Overall, I highly recommend you see Superman as soon as you can.
It’s a great movie and the start to Gunn’s DCU, which is slated for multiple more films and TV shows in the years to come.
So show someone some hope today… After all, in the wise words of Superman: “kindness is the new punk rock!”
