JID started the summer off with a bang, dropping “WRK” as the lead single for his upcoming album.
Two months later, JID was featured on “Bodies”, a single released by Offset.
A month later, he released GDLU (Preluxe), which featured four songs that didn’t make the upcoming album.
Twenty days after his busy month, JID copied J. Cole’s “Dollar and a Dream” tour, performing the prelude in five cities and charging one dollar per ticket.
JID released God Does Like Ugly on August 8th, blowing fans away.
The Rolling Stone Magazine said, “JID matriculates from a student of the game to a leader.”
This album marked a career record for JID, earning 8.8 million opening-day streams on Spotify alone.
Within a week of the album’s release, four of JID’s top ten most-streamed songs on Spotify are from this new album.
JID captivates his audience and draws them in with amazing beats and features, including Don Toliver, Earthgang, Ty Dolla $ign, and more, all under the Dreamville and Interscope Records banners.
JID said, “There’s so much talent coming from my city that I always like shining a light on.”
JID tries to highlight the talent from his hometown on every album and give features to some underground artists who are still working their way up in the rap game, showcasing his commitment to his hometown and everybody who helped him along the way.
Much like The Forever Story, which is the predecessor of God Does Like Ugly, the album explores a deeper personal theme relating to his upbringing and family.
When asked about whether this album was a part of his healing process from losing his grandmother, JID said, “That combined with my brother who’s back in prison and just losing a bunch of people between the forever story and now.”
JID named this album after a saying his grandmother used to say.
She used to say “god does like ugly”, which was a homage to his grandmother, who used it to represent struggle, pain, and triumph.
JID masterfully created a multifaceted album that will enrapture you and propel your desire to keep listening.
With this album, JID tells a story and dives into the stereotypes and chaos that’s in the world.
He speaks about his brother being incarcerated and the struggle with that, not only in his own family but in the millions of families that have similar problems.
JID said, “Those real genuine music moments that change people’s lives, I try to put this on rap albums.”
JID incorporates poetic lines that highlight the struggles people face.
On these albums, he tries to change people’s lives for the better through his lyrics.
JID tries to be a better artist each time he steps up to the mic and uses it to tell stories.
For instance, the last song on the track “For Keeps” tells his story, his come-up, and reveals how he recently became a father.
While JID is a rapper, his new album God Does Like Ugly also shows him to be a poet, and much more.
God Does Like Ugly was released on August 8th and can be found on Spotify, Soundcloud, and Apple Music.
