We sat down with Sunnyslope’s new dean, Jens Eerie and asked him 10 questions.
What inspired you to go into the education field in the first place?
I used to own a skateboard shop. I would tutor kids in math after hours. I felt better about helping students learn than selling them shoes.
If you weren’t working in education, what do you think you’d be doing?
I’d probably be an engineer.
Did you ever imagine yourself taking on the role of school dean, or did it come as more
of a surprise?
My plan was to teach math until I retire.
What is your favorite part about your job?
My favorite part of being a dean is making a positive impact on kids.
What do you enjoy most about being a part of this school community?
This school has been here for almost 75 years. The culture that has developed over those years is amazing and supportive.
What are you most looking forward to this school year?
I’m most looking forward to learning how to be more efficient.
What is your favorite Sunnyslope tradition?
The bonfire is insane. I still can’t believe they do that every year.
What do you think is your greatest accomplishment?
Raising my two boys to be the kids they are today.
What do you think students might be surprised to learn about you?
I’m still pretty good at snowboarding and skateboarding.
If you could give one piece of advice to every student, what would it be?
Don’t be scared to take risks. The most successful people have made plenty of mistakes. It’s okay to be wrong in class, try out for a sport that you might not make, or join a club you’re not sure about. Push yourself to be the best you can be.
