Three million people tuned in to watch the 2025 U.S. Open, which took place on September 7th.
This year, there was a turn of events when Tennis player Carlos Alcaraz not only won the men’s singles final, but also took the place of Tennis player Jannik Sinner as the number one men’s tennis player in the world.
The last time Alcaraz held the number 1 ranking was during the 2022 Grand Slam season.
“It’s great to achieve the goal I had at the beginning of the year. It feels amazing to get the chance to be number one again,” said Alcaraz in his U.S. Open Press Conference.
While Alcaraz was thrilled with his win, Sinner was disappointed by his
own performance.
“I felt that I was struggling a lot today,” said a defeated Sinner during his press conference.
Sinner may not have been happy with the outcome of this year’s U.S. Open, but he still has a lot to be proud of in the Grand Slam 2025 season, having won two of the four major titles, the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
“I think this is the part I’m proudest of because it really has not been easy,” said Sinner at his Wimbledon press conference when asked about his title wins.
However, Alcaraz won the two other major titles of the 2025 season: the French Open, in addition to the U.S. Open.
In both competitions, Alcaraz faced off against Sinner, making it 15 times the two athletes have competed since 2021.
“I’m seeing [Sinner] more than my family,” Alcaraz joked during his on-court interview after his victory at the U.S. Open.
Nonetheless, Sinner and Alcaraz have been truly dominating men’s tennis in recent years.
“I do think Sinner and Alcaraz, over the next three, four years will dominate,” said ESPN broadcaster and former tennis player Patrick McEnroe.
Broadcasters view Sinner and Alcaraz as unstoppable, although they have some competitors.
One of these is 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic, who is currently ranked 4th in the world for men’s singles.
“They’re just too good, you know, playing on a really high level,” said Djokovic about Sinner and Alcaraz in an interview with ESPN.
However, despite his ranking, Djokovic has been having trouble keeping up.
Yet he’s not the only one, as other players have also had trouble trying to compare to Sinner and Alcaraz.
“I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to lift the trophy,” said 3rd-ranked player Alexander Zvere after the Australian Open.
Zverev and Sinner went head-to-head at the men’s singles finals at the Australian Open in January of 2025, and Sinner swept the floor with him, winning 3-0.
Although losing to Sinner or Alcaraz has led some players to lose their confidence in their performance, it has made some athletes more determined.
“I think they motivate the rest of the guys to improve,” said 5th-ranked athlete Taylor Fritz, “you’re going to have to improve a lot if you want to, you know, beat them and contend for the biggest titles.”
Although Fritz has never won against Sinner, he has one win against Alcaraz from the 2025 Lavar Cup, which took place on September 20th.
“I didn’t second-guess myself. I didn’t play too safe. I played with no fear on a lot of the big points. That’s how you have to play against [Alcaraz],” stated Fritz in an interview with Tennis Channel.
Even with the slim chances of interrupting the Sinner-Alcaraz fight, will anyone be able to take the top spot? Only time will tell.
