The Sunnyslope Boys Golf team has won four district championships in a row and is looking to qualify for state this year, according to Head Coach Joshua Woznicki.
Seniors Ira Goldman, Chase Simpson, and Fischer Pieratt have won the championship every year they’ve attended Sunnyslope.
These seniors have shaped the team through their leadership and hard work, both of which are aspects of their game that they are hoping to carry into this season.
The boys believe that the shared love for the sport is one of the biggest contributors to the team’s winning nature.
Pieratt said, “The team has been successful in these last couple years because of the strong passion each and everyone one of us has for the game.”
But the team’s strategy in the game also plays a big role in winning the championship.
Senior Ryan Clark said the team is, “still using a qualifying system that gives our team the best chance of playing the best golfers for each match. Even though it’s tough not qualifying at times, it gives our team the best chance at state.”
Furthermore, the individual part of the game is also very important when it comes to how well the team does as a whole.
Simpson believes he has become “a better leader and person from golf…the countless hours I’ve spent on the game have really been what made the difference.”
However, these boys have not only grown for themselves but for their fellow teammates and coaches as well.
Woznicki is proud of how far his team has come, and said it is, “rewarding to get to know the players as people and help them grow both on and off the golf course.”
And the team spirit doesn’t stop there.
Freshman Maxwell Running is inspired by the team’s leadership and admires how the older boys, “encourage and cheer on the team but also play well in matches.”
