[Sophomore] John Mattingly of Sunnyslope High School was selected as The Arizona Republic’s high school athlete of the week in polls posted on azcentral.com. More than 5,000 combined votes were cast in this week’s polls.

Mattingly, a Vikings’ basketball player, was nominated after scoring 43 points in 62-60 win over Brophy. He also scored 31 against Damien, 24 against Campbell Hall, 28 against La Mirada, and 18 against Heritage Christian in The Classic at Damien tournament in California.

After the trip to California, Mattingly told The Viking Views “It was great competition… And we learned a lot about ourselves after that [tournament.]”
