For the senior standout, this season isn’t just about winning games it’s about finishing a lifelong journey the right way. For Senior Jake Keebler, a varsity soccer player, that moment has finally arrived, closing out a career defined by years of dedication, growth, and leadership. Keebler’s soccer journey started very early on in his life. “I started when I was about 4,” Keebler said. “I kind of stopped other sports just to pursue the goal of soccer and playing in college.” That decision paid off, and he’s now achieved that dream and plans to continue playing at the next level. Keebler is soon heading off to Coe College, but he didn’t do it alone. He’s had many people help him along the way. A major influence on Keebler was his club coach Brian Keehn. “He helped me become a better person and a better soccer player altogether,” Keebler said. “He helped me through rough times and slumps.” Keebler’s coaches, both for club and high school, give him high praise. Over the course of his high school career, Keebler has built a strong résumé filled with memorable moments. One of his favorites came during his sophomore year when his team made a deep playoff run. “We went to the quarterfinals of the tournament, and it was really fun,” he said. More recently, he earned a major individual honor. “This year I ended up winning region offensive player of the year, which was huge for me and something I’ve been working toward all my life.” Keebler has a mindset that really sets him apart from the rest. Jake has an incredible work rate on and off the field with his involvement in student council. His versatility and competitive drive have helped him handle challenges throughout his career. “He doesn’t like losing,” Varsity Soccer Coach Mike Fenton said. “We play tough teams, and he faces that adversity as well as any player.” Keebler has had some incredible memories playing for Sunnyslope over the years, especially this year. Almost all of the seniors this year have been playing on the same team since they were young. “We’ve been playing together since we were kids,” Keebler said. “This year we finally got it all together and made a decent run.” That chemistry has shaped both the team’s performance and Jake’s role as a leader. Coach Fenton certainly believes in Jake’s ability on the field and is very hopeful about his future in soccer. Looking ahead, Fenton believes Jake’s future in soccer is bright. “He knows what he’s doing. He’ll contribute on offense, get back on defense, and have a good college career—he’ll be able to score and assist,” said Fenton. Jake’s ability with and without the ball has been crucial the past few years to the team’s success. “He kind of runs the offense,” Fenton said. “His technical sense of movement and ball control… he’s created multiple go-ahead goals and game-tying goals.” Fenton continued to speak on how Jake has proven to be a key piece of the team’s success as a team player as well. “He has the goal-scoring ability, but he also has the assisting ability.” As Jake’s high school career comes to an end, his legacy is already clear: a player who not only excelled on the field but has also helped shape the team around him. And while the final whistle may have blown, his impact on the program will last well beyond it. With college soccer ahead, he leaves behind a program shaped by his leadership skills, many of which he has gained by being a very active member in the student council. “I’ve been working toward this my whole life,” Keebler said. “Now that it’s here, I just want to make the most of every moment I have left.”
