The Sunnyslope Track Team was invited to an elite track competition in California called the Tiger Invitational, where the slope athletes got a chance to showcase their athletic abilities against top athletes from around the country.
The athletes arrived in Los Angeles, California on Friday April 3rd where the weather was significantly better than Arizona.
Freshman Eric (Trey) Martin said, “the weather was much better, and more enjoyable to compete in.”
It takes a lot to bring the athletes out to compete.
Freshman Josh Arleth said, “prior to the trip, the team hosted a fundraiser to be able to afford the travel.”
The turn out was very successful, and the invitational was made up of some of the top athletes from around the country.
“There were more than 80 schools from out of state competing,” said Arleth.
Although there was a lot of competition many slope athletes performed well.
“Aniyah and Trey Martin both were standouts as well as Benicio Chavez and Ajani Leggett” Arleth said.
Since the meet was an invitational not all the athletes were able to attend.
Martin said he enjoyed rooming with his fellow teammates, and the event was more than just track.
Most of the athletes enjoyed competing in California rather than Arizona.
There was a nice cool breeze, and the idea of competing out of state was very exciting, Arleth said.
Many athletes made new personal records.
Trey Martin said that he made a new PR in the 400 meter.
Not only was the environment different with the weather component, but
Arleth said, “The meet was way more serious and competitive than the in-state track meets.”
