As the giant space shuttle prepared for takeoff, people everywhere held their breath in anticipation. The crew members breathed steadily in their helmets and heavy gear. They have prepared their whole lives for this moment. As they launched into the sky, the Earth became smaller and smaller, and they were submerged in the darkness of the universe with a glowing gray moon behind them. NASA’s Artemis 2 launched on April 1, 2026 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to venture around the moon and prove that their technology is safe for future moon landings. The four crew members were Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen. They returned safely on April 10 by splashing down in the Pacific Ocean. “The flight is humanity’s first crewed mission to the Moon in over 50 years, and it is meant to build toward a future lunar landing,”The Planetary Society wrote on their website. This mission is a monumental event that will forever change humanity. “(T)his crew reflects a new era, featuring the first woman and first person of color assigned to a lunar mission,” reported WCNC, and “is one giant leap for space exploration.” This expedition highlights diversity in space research and will open the gateway for more progress, marking a new era of space exploration. Diversity in our space program has the power to empower a new generation. “…we surpass the furthest distance humans have ever traveled from planet Earth…we most importantly choose this moment to challenge this generation and the next to make sure this record is not long-lived,” said Astronaut Jeremy Hansen to the Canadian Space Society. As NASA ventures farther into space than ever before, the data and experience from this trip will be used to improve our knowledge of space and help our space program to continue to discover more.“Teams will conduct detailed inspections, retrieve post-flight data, remove reusable components such as avionics, and eliminate remaining hazards such as excess fuel and coolant,” said on their website, NASA. New discoveries about space exploration will help to develop new ways to thrive in space. Some ways even include going to other planets. “NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover has discovered never-before-seen organic compounds that may indicate there was once life on the red planet,” said Tullahoma News on their website. After their long journey, they landed down in the Pacific Ocean on the Orion spacecraft. “This is an incredible test of an incredible machine,” said NASA Associate Administrator Amit Kshatriya to PBS news. Coming back down to Earth is not easy, but the space shuttle was built so cleverly that the astronauts were able to land safely. The new technology used from this space craft will inspire a new generation of space exploration for years to come. All in all, this mission is one that is unforgettable and is a major milestone for space exploration. NASA is already scheduling an Artemis 3, set to launch in 2027.
