When he first arrived as a freshman, he was on the JV volleyball team.
No one knew he would be one of the best boys’ volleyball players that Sunnyslope has ever seen.
Senior Mickey Gerdes may have started his journey as a JV player, but now he finds himself the captain of a 6A team headed to the playoffs this year.
He has broken his old record of most kills in a single game at 24, beating the previous 23 kills.
However, his expertise is not just on the court; he is also qualified for FBLA nationals.
Gerdes breaking his own record comes as no surprise, as he is the most efficient hitter on the varsity team, averaging almost 5 kills a set.
When asked about how he felt when he broke the record, he said, “I didn’t even know that I broke the record until a manager went up to me.”
Adding on to that, Gerdes also said it’s been a goal since last year, and he wasn’t expecting to do it against a “good team.” This was a very clutch moment for the team, as it was a big win for the team.
Gerdes was referring to Desert Ridge High School.
Coach Brooke Kern, when asked how it has felt to see Mickey grow, said, “It has been fun to watch him grow as a player and a person.”
She also added that “his fire is contagious” when the team is down. Senior Darren Desmond explained that Mickey is “a good volleyball player and someone I can share a laugh with.”
When Gerdes was asked how he had been preparing for FBLA nationals, Gerdes said that he would be absent for nationals, but he is “doing everything that is requested of me so my team can be successful.” Mickey has accomplished great things at Sunnyslope and will carry this on as a Lumberjack.
