From chugging sparkling water to warzoning kids, Science Teacher Troy Linnartz is one of the most memorable teachers at Sunnyslope.
For the past 25 years, Sunnyslope has been graced with the gift of his teaching. Year after year he taught students about science, but also let them ask questions about real world events.
He loves to tell different accounts of things, and even Principal Jonathan Parker called him a “special storyteller.” While every student may not have him, they probably have heard of him, with Freshman Kyleigh Smith saying she’s heard he’s “a little crazy but super invested with his students.” This dedication is proven through all the endeavors he’s participated in at Slope through the years. Linnartz himself talked about his coaching history with Boys and Girls Tennis, as well as Boys Soccer, and even described them as some of his “best times” at Sunnyslope.
While some students have been able to have him as a teacher or coach, there will obviously be lots of future students that don’t get the opportunity to have him because of his retirement.
Freshman Alyssa Cleaves expressed her disappointment in not being able to have him next year for Biology.
She explained that she would’ve liked to have him because when hearing about him, her friends “have said his class is pretty fun and he’s a funny dude.”
She also remembers hearing about being warzoned; disciplinary action Linnartz takes when a student is talking too much.
That student is called to stand up while the song “Warzone” by Yoko Ono blasts until you are moved to a new seat. The legacy of Mr. Linnartz and all he has done will not be forgotten, even if he doesn’t believe it himself. Linnartz admitted that he’ll be “forgotten by all really I imagine by September.”
On the contrary, different people on campus have all expressed how much they will miss him and the memories he makes with people.
Parker noted it is “very bittersweet to see good teachers go,” adding that teachers like Marilyn Matias, Sam Jacobs, and Paul Hershberger are also leaving.
Anything has a possibility to happen in Linnartz’s class and while that is coming to an end, there is one thing that is known for certain; he will be greatly missed.
