Sunnyslope Varsity Boys Basketball faced an early challenge when they hosted Millennium in a highly anticipated match between the top two teams in the state.
After a tough first quarter, the Vikings brought the score up, winning 61-57.
Despite a slow start, Sunnyslope responded with intensity on both the offense and defense, securing the win for the Vikings.
“In the first quarter we just started off slow, their game plan was a bit different than we expected and it shocked us a little,” said Junior Delton Prescott III.
Players emphasized that the team was unprepared at the start, as the opposing team’s unexpected game plan led to a slow first quarter.
“We just came out flat and they came out ready and prepared,” said Junior Darius Wabbington.
After an unfocused start against a ready opponent, the team realized they needed to elevate their play to make a comeback.
“We knew that we had to step up our game for the points to start coming back,” said Senior Rider Portela.
After adjusting their approach, the players slowed things down, played with confidence, and leaned on teamwork to turn things around.
“We slowed down and started to play our game, nothing to it just trusting each other,” said Prescott III.
Focusing on the game and relying on each other was key with the pressure of maintaining their lead.
“We didn’t want to lose that number one spot,” said Portela.
Determined not to fall behind, the team trusted each other and gave their best effort to achieve the win.
Both teams were preparing for a highly anticipated matchup, aware of the tough competition and the large crowd expected.
“For this game, we knew [tickets] would sell out and we anticipated a large crowd for the varsity game,” said Tim Matteson, assistant principal of operations & athletics.
With a large audience expected, staff concentrated on safety, organization, and keeping the experience enjoyable for all.
“We did everything we could to alleviate frustrations, increase security, and allow everyone to enjoy the experience,” said Matteson.
“Millennium is a great team but we trust our guys and we came out and performed to our capabilities. If we do that we should come out with the outcome we want,” said Prescott III.
Confident in their abilities and aware of the challenges ahead, the team is focusing on adjusting their plays for the upcoming game against Millenium on February 10.
“I think it will be another great game with both teams making adjustments but I think we know what to expect now and will be more prepared,” said Wabbington.
