In a time where Sunnyslope High School has emerged as one of the top basketball programs in Arizona, many students and basketball fans around the state wonder what makes them so good. One player stands out to the crowd with his size and skills.
“I grew up with this community starting with RAMMS, and I always wanted to win a state championship ever since I was young,” Junior Darius Wabbington said.
Wabbington completed that goal this year, while also picking up many awards like winning 1st team all Arizona honors, winning MVP in the Damien Classic, and joining team USA. This has made Wabbington become one of the top players in the 2027 class during his memorable high school career.
Wabbington has been on varsity all three years of his time at Sunnyslope High School and has just brought home the program’s first open division state championship in his junior year.
Freshman Linus Turner said, “He is a big body on the court, a mismatch, and is a great offensive player.” He also said Darius is like a “big brother to him.”
Wabbington isn’t done yet though, as he is only a junior.
Wabbington claimed, “I want to win another state championship and go back to back.”
Although on the court some games may seem easy with such a talented team, Darius and the Sunnyslope High School basketball team have put in a lot of unseen work in order to achieve what they did.
Turner stated in the interview that “A lot of long practices, sweat, and hard work” has gone into winning the state championship.
With Sunnyslope High School winning multiple tournaments and the state championship, Wabbington has had his moments and has done a lot for the team this season that have helped them succeed.
Basketball Coach Ray Portela said, “He is not scared of the moment, and he picks up everyone in practice.”
Wabbington’s impact goes beyond his skills and scoring, as he has now taken on a bigger role this past season as the leader.
Portela also added, “He is a very vocal leader and tries to motivate his teammates in a positive way.”
A big influence on Wabbington’s high school career has been the guidance and help from one of the better coaches in the high school basketball scene.
According to Wabbington, he has been grateful for the opportunity of being around Coach Portela, as he said, “He’s just pushed me and continues to push me, helping me reach levels I didn’t know I had, but he saw.”
Wabbington holds offers from many colleges such as Texas and Arizona, with lots of success and popularity around his name he praises his family for helping him get where he is.
Wabbington said, “My family motivates me the most not only on the court but also to be the best person I can be.”
Darius’s impact on the court and off has been influential for his teammates and the school. One thing is clear though, he doesn’t plan to slow down anytime soon.
