Sunnyslope baseball has started off hot in 2024 with their season so far being highlighted by a 7-3 upset over Basha High School.
Leading the way was Glendale CC commit Senior Diego Lovesy who threw 6.1 innings without giving up an earned run.
“Diego is a great guy on and off the field,” said Senior Preston Daniels “He brings a different energy when he is on the mound that other people can’t do.”
On the field Lovesy has been a monster and key to the 8-2 start of the Vikings this year holding an ERA of .86 with a team leading 16.1 innings pitched and next year he’ll be looking to put stats like that for the Gauchos.
“I’ve always wanted to play baseball in college,” said Lovesy, “It’s always been a goal for me.”
Not only will the fact that Glendale is not that far from Sunnyslope hopefully help Lovesy with the transition, but he will also be heading into a clubhouse with some familiar faces.
Lovesy said, “I’ve played with a couple players on GCC growing up , so it will be fun playing with them again.”
It’s no surprise that Lovesy found a home as during the past off-season he made drastic strides with his pitching which should have foreshadowed his breakout year.
Daniels said, “He has improved the most over summer by getting his velocity up with his trainer.”
However, Daniels thinks Sunnyslope has also had a role in his improvement and development.
“It has benefited him a lot,” said Daniels, “Playing with a bunch of guys who all want to do something big this year.”
There’s no doubt that being a Viking has had some sort of effect on Lovesy, and it will only be with fondness that he looks back on his time at Sunnyslope.
“I’ve had a great time playing at Sunnyslope,” Lovesy said, “I grew up with my team, so it’s been fun seeing all my teammates develop on and off the field.”
Lastly he hopes to surprise some folks in the playoffs this year and the way the team is rolling that seems likely and Lovesy will doubtlessly be part of any run they make.
