It’s not easy to get recruited to play sports in college, and for those who do it’s difficult to know if that is really the school for you.
However, for a baseball player here at Sunnyslope they may have found the perfect place during the recruitment process.
This would be Senior Carter Deckwa who signed with Concordia University in Wisconsin.
“Going through the process it was something that I found everything that was right for me,” said Deckwa, “So, it was going through with Concordia especially.”
Concorida finished the year last year 21-18 and much about the baseball program appealed to Deckwa.
“It was all the coaches is what you’re looking at to commit there,” said Deckwa, “and the people around were just fun.”
Deckwa, who has been on Varsity for 3 years, had a betting average of .254 last year and has pushed it up to .429 early this season.
“One goal, I feel individually is just to do what I’ve been doing – produce as much as i can for the team,” Deckwa said, “or just for myself in general to be continuing my mindset going into college, so just producing and doing well on the field.”
Through the early parts of the year Deckwas has done just that, but this shouldn’t be much of a surprise.
A former teammate, Senior Brooks Bonham, said that he plays hard and “He always had his head up.”
Moving on from Sunnyslope though will be a test for Deckwa just as it is for any other athletes pursuing their dreams into college and during that test Deckwa will always have the memories he made while a Viking.
“I feel the bond that I’ve gotten with most of the guys; it’s been good, “said Deckwa, “I’ve been to myself mostly because I’m working hard in what I want to do, but I feel the bond over the past 4 years.”
Before he moves on to cold temperature in Wisconsin, Deckwa still has business to take care of while he’s a Viking but that doesn’t mean he can’t be excited.
“I’m excited to be continuing my baseball career going on for 4 more years,” Deckwa said.
