A classroom with its walls covered by artwork on every wall, each side of the room there’s something new to notice. The room isn’t just dedicated to the students’ artwork, but also littered with trophies from years of being the swim team captain. Algebra 1 teacher Cameron Licht has been a core part of students’ education at Sunnyslope, taking on Honors Algebra 1, helping the freshman class adjust and learn what it’s like to be in high school, as well as taking on College Algebra, helping seniors get a feel for college before their final semester ends. Students in Licht’s class learn with a helping hand always available. Licht asks questions, helps you if you need it and slows down to help the students at their own pace. Licht’s class is like a comfortable seat on a long drive home. He takes you in, helps you relax and turns high school into your home, connecting with his class and other teachers. Licht is one of the best at math in the entirety of Sunnyslope, known by other teachers for having a ‘calculator-like brain,’ solving complex equations in his head in moments and being able to express how he did it to the class in a way that feels comfortable to them. He gives students time in class to do their assignments, so if a student is in need of help on a problem, he is there to teach them instead of forcing the student to search for the answer and not learn the solution. Freshman Vivienne Raley said “He’s funny, and [that] he actually knows how to teach, answering questions thoroughly and knows how to help the students with their problems.” “I like Mr.Lichts class because of how he doesn’t always take the class seriously, he has fun while he’s teaching and explains all the lessons well.” said Freshman Mattea Talkington.. Licht connects with students all around campus from freshman to seniors on a level most other teachers can’t reach. He jokes with his class, he expresses emotion to his class, and he truly cares for the students and the future of Sunnyslope High School. If you or anyone you know plans on going far in your mathematics career, consider going into College Algebra with Cameron Licht for a great closing year to your time with the Vikings.
