Posters of athletes, movie stars, and Van Gogh paintings line the walls, acting as cautionary tales of life. Every student is intrigued at the sounds coming from the speakers: the music of artists as disparate as Tool, Fleetwood Mac, and ABBA. Science Teacher Troy Linnartz’s second floor classroom draws students in, and whether they’re there for class or not, they will always end up learning something.
The dissection of sheep’s hearts at the end of the cardiovascular unit is an example of Linnartz’s dedication to the material he teaches. Bioscience is the perfect mix of spontaneity and order, and it’s a class that’s hard to find boring.
By taking Bioscience with Linnartz, you will learn about the different systems of the body, but you’re subject to hearing edifying life stories, quotes from philosophers, and Linnartz even shows scenes of movies he thinks students will take something from.
The life lessons of K-206 are those of a smoky barroom, full of ancient wisdom and sage advice from old-timers. But you will not find a barstool and an old bartender, you’ll find Linnartz relaying valuable lessons, cautionary tales, and entertaining stories that are sure to keep you engaged and interested.
Linnartz has an approach that people find unique and refreshing. Students are encouraged to ask questions about things they’re curious about, and they’ll be surprised on how much he knows about any given topic. Homework is light, but when there is an assignment, he expects it to be on time. As long as you’re paying attention and engaged in conversations, this class is sure to be your favorite. Linnartz’s mix of deadpan humor and dad jokes have made him a favorite of students all around Sunnyslope.
“It’s cool that he lets us speak our opinion without getting upset,” Freshman Kinsley Richards said.
She appreciates his willingness to let kids speak their truth, and ask questions. Other students appreciate the fact he’s well-versed on what he’s teaching.
“He explains stuff really well and his class is really interesting,” Freshman Madeline Thompson said.
A sense of humor is always brought up when talking about Linnartz.
“He always has jokes that make the class laugh,” Senior Jake Steimel said.
Linnartz constantly finds a way to make class interesting. Whether it’s the stories of his brush with rabies, the movie clips he shows, or the sheep brains that students will dissect, Bioscience with Mr. Linnartz is a class you will never be bored in. Unfortunately for Sunnyslope, he’s retiring after this school year, which means it’s not being offered next year. But students who have had it all agree: Linnartz does it best.
