After just two years at Sunnyslope, she has already made a name for herself on campus and the competition floor.
Sophomore Laurel Acken is a standout in speech and debate, she’s already collected a string of awards for her powerful performances, all while balancing her academics and her role on the softball team.
Acken’s speech and debate teammate, Sophomore Gianna Pettit describes Laurel as someone who always goes above and beyond to help others.
“She’s always willing to help at competitions if anyone needs help,” Pettit said.
That supportive spirit carries into Laurel’s performances, where she uses creativity to connect with her audience.
Acken explains that spoken word is her favorite event because of the artistic factor that allows her to express herself more.
This art of speech can be difficult to convey to an audience without truly understanding your topic.
Speech and Debate Advisor Natalie Parker remarked that Acken “has a deep understanding of how to win an audience. She presents them with thoughtful and captivating speeches every time.”
Her determination and talent shines through at competitions as well as her role of treasurer of the club.
Pettit said,“She always puts in a lot of effort to help fundraise for the team which is so important for us.”
Acken also helps the team in becoming better speakers, almost acting as a coach.
Parker described that Acken “has a natural talent for public speaking, so she came in with a lot of skill already! She has grown in her ability to teach and coach others immensely”.
This growth is easy to see as it shines through in many of Acken’s recent accomplishments.
Acken said, “My proudest moment was definitely making it to the semi-finals as a freshman. It felt really special.”
Parker commented that Acken is always learning and observing her peers, and taking their constructive criticism to heart.
Acken’s success hasn’t just motivated her, but it’s motivated the team to do well.
“Laurel’s success has made us all wanna do better and bring home a win,” Pettit said.
Acken stays busy when she’s off the floor by participating in JV Softball.
“Softball is somewhat of a different outlet for me and it lets me be with a team of great people,” said Acken.
Softball provides Acken with community, but speech and debate has shaped her on a deeper level.
While softball gives Acken an outlet beyond the podium, her coach sees her future shining brightest in speech and debate.
Parker said, “I hope that Laurel continues to seek out opportunities in this field! She has a true gift.”
Balancing the focus of competition with the joy of teamwork, Laurel has found her voice both on and off the stage.
Her journey through speech and debate shows not only her talent but also her determination to keep learning, inspiring others to do the same.
