Sunnyslope Varsity Boys Basketball had a spectacular winter break, and have earned the ranks fourth in the nation and first in Arizona; Sunnyslope’s dominant winter break success proves the Vikings earned their spot. winning The Classic at Damien’s Platinum Bracket on December 30, 2025 with Junior Delton Prescott earning MVP and winning Hoophall West’s Traditional Bracket on January 3, 2026 with Junior Darius Wabbington earning MVP.
During The Classic at Damien, Sunnyslope competed in the highest division: the Platinum Bracket.
The team faced Roosevelt High School (CA) in the first round and won 64-52.
The following game against St. John Bosco (CA) went into overtime, but ended with the Vikings taking the win 61-54.
Sunnyslope kept the momentum into the next round by beating Crespi (CA) 65-48.
In the championship game, Sunnyslope walked away winners of their bracket 71-63 against Redondo Union (CA).
With five assists, four rebounds, and 22 points scored in the championship game, Prescott was named MVP of The Classic at Damien.
Just days after claiming their win at The Classic at Damien, Sunnyslope headed to Mesa to compete in the Hoophall West Tournament.
The first round of the Hoophall West Tournament began on January 1, 2026 and started successfully as the Vikings defeated Bishop Gormon (NV) 65-51.
In an interview with the AzCentral after the win, Wabbington said, “We’re hungry [to win] the championship.”
Sunnyslope certainly was hungry to take home the trophy because they beat DeMatha (MD) 60-49 in the semi-finals, allowing them to advance to the championship game against Wheeler (GA).
Wheeler had previously defeated another highly ranked Arizona team, Millennium.
Although Wheeler, the No. 5 nationally ranked Georgia team put up a fight, Sunnyslope ultimately finished it.
Sunnyslope became the champions of the Hoophall West Traditional Bracket with a close victory of 61-59.
Wabbington was also named MVP for the tournament.
With the way Sunnyslope has been playing, there is no doubt that the team will continue to rise to any occasion or challenge thrown their way.
