Sunnyslope varsity softball pulled off an impressive comeback victory after being down 11-0 against Corona del Sol April 13.
Corona del Sol opened up with a 10 run second inning, but Slope answered quickly in the third with a 5-run third inning. The team stayed determined and confident, eventually turning the game around and winning, according to Varsity softball coach Michael Fenton.
At first, the team thought the game might be over, but quickly realized they could turn things around and fight back. Instead of giving up, they worked together and focused on teamwork, determination and staying positive during the game.
“It was a tough beginning, but we talked about coming back little by little. We didn’t worry about 11 runs, just a couple at a time,” Head Coach Michael Fenton said.
Early on when the team was down 11-0, they believed the game was gonna end soon.
“I think we thought the game was going to end in like 30 minutes and we were going to have to run sprints,” Freshman Ava Hernandez said.
Coach Fenton noticed some lack of effort in the early innings, however he also noticed the players still had energy and fight left in them.
“As we gave up the early runs, the team was disappointed but still energetic and positive. I knew they had some fight left,” said Coach Fenton.
Despite the team’s disappointment the determination began to show and the team started to build momentum quickly.
“Actually, the next inning. We strung together a few hits and scored a few runs. The excitement was back.” said Coach Fenton.
Although the players were discouraged at first, they never gave up on one another.
“I don’t think we ever wanted to give up because we’d beat them early in the week so we knew we could do it again,” said Hernandez.
Another factor in the comeback was the overconfidence of the opposing team, which could have given Sunnyslope an opportunity to come back in the game.
“I definitely think the team thought they had already won and that gave us a chance to come back and win it,” Hernandez said.
Following the victory, the team felt proud, excited and surprised.
“We were definitely happy and surprised at how long the game went,” Hernandez said.
The excitement wasn’t only limited to the players, their coach was also very excited.
“It was fun to see the team light up and know that we were good enough for a comeback,” said Coach Fenton.
