Green sound proofing panels surround the walls and the sound of music encompasses the classroom. As the piece finishes, inspired students laugh and smile, even if they played a wrong note.
Then, the beautiful song starts again as Stephen Alguire leads his Beginning Band class.
Alguire’s beginning class allows students to have fun and experience different instruments. They practice instruments of all families and are then able to choose one to continue refining. High-schoolers in this class learn various skills such as sight reading, tone and technique, and just properly playing an instrument that lead them to become a better musician.
The class is like a neighborhood. Each section is different, but they all come together to create a pleasant community and brilliant music. Students make strong connections in this class that will last the rest of their high school career.
Unlike many classes, tests aren’t difficult or stressful. He allows students to retake a test until they get a 100% and he creates a classroom environment that is safe and judgement free. Furthermore, Alguire is always making jokes that cause students to smile and have fun. He is able to keep the class controlled yet exciting. His main goal is to prepare his students to become successful in music. It is a great class and a great opportunity to improve.
“I like how he knows everything about every single section,” Freshman Cody Aponte said, “when he sees a problem, he doesn’t let it slide and fixes it the best he can.”
Alguire really tries his best to make sure that everyone knows what’s going on and is always happy to help.
Senior Amelia Brewer said she enjoys learning another instrument and observing the “different techniques Alguire uses to teach.”
Brewer has done band for all of her 4 years at Sunnyslope and is now a TA for the beginning band class. Alguire keeps his class engaging and exceptionally creative, which is why many students who join beginning band will continue to advanced band and stick with it.
Freshman Amaya DeLisle said, “He’s a really good teacher and teaches music in a way [so] that we’re able to apply it to different instruments easily.”
It is clear to see that Alguire is really determined to help his students grow but to also keep it a stress-free class. He is a very amazing, supportive teacher; everyone should consider signing up for band because they will not regret it!
