A small airplane crashed around 2:30 pm on April 12th on 7th Street and Missouri in Phoenix, without injuring anyone, due to an emergency with the engine.
A retired pilot flying the aircraft along with two other pilots decided to make an emergency landing 10 minutes into their planned 30 minute flight around the valley.
The head pilot Micheal Tragarz told Fox 10 News, “I was taking some fellow pilots on a Valley tour, meant to last between 20 to 30 minutes. Instead, we ended up crashing into the roadway along 7th Street in Midtown Phoenix after just 10 minutes in the air.”
After what was planned to be a quick trip, it quickly went wrong.
Tragarz said in the same Fox 10 News interview, “there were very few options,” the other pilots agreed that they needed to land fast after “receiving indications of high RPM [-revolutions per minute-] and lost control of the propellers.”
An emergency landing on 7th Street was the only option at this point.
“You know, most of the time that place is just packed with traffic and there was nobody there,” Tragarz said to ABC 15, “it looked like a runway at that time, the traffic gods were in our favor.”
Luckily there were not many cars in the street and there were very few buildings in the area that no one was severely injured besides the humans in the aircraft having very minor injuries.
The plane landed near where students in the Sunnyslope community lives, such as a student who said she lives in a condo complex only feet away from where the small aircraft landed and was grateful that they ended up getting to the ground safely, not landing on her condo. Freshman Nihal Khlasa, said that his father works at the office behind where the plane landed and also was grateful the pilots landed where they did.
There were many obstacles in the way for the pilots landing including a few buildings, power lines, and a traffic sign but they were able to get around the obstacles.
Tragarz told FOX 10 “the plane slid a bit upon landing, but quickly came to a stop.” He said the damage to the plane was much less than what could have been, as “it only hit the curb and a water valve.”
With very few odds stacked against the pilots they pulled off getting this done with no injuries.
People such as Phoenix Fire Captain DJ Lee who helped with this crash agree that this was a miracle.
